I Can Travel On My Own . . .
Our SMART Travel Program (STP) increases independent, individual mobility to decrease barriers people with disabilities often encounter accessing work and community. We use smart phones to teach individuals we serve to safely ride public mass transit, teaching individuals with to navigate travel using picture, word and audio prompts and GPS landmarks (a mapped route).
Adults participating in the pilot SMART Travel Program receive Independent Living services from ARCA and have a need to travel to and from work, medical appointments, grocery stores and recreational sites. They choose destinations they want to learn.
ARCA developed this innovative transportation project under Federal Transit Administration’s New Freedom Funding and collaborates with the Mid-Region Council of Governments and the City of Albuquerque. STP includes pre-program travel and literacy assessments. ARCA’s SMART Travel program designates a “tech savvy” project coordinator to teach direct support professionals how to support individuals in the use of this very modern adaptive tool.
